Automóveis, caminhões, ônibus e motos começarão a receber o chip de identificação, que fornecerá informações em tempo real sobre os veículos já a partir de 2011 segundo informou o Siniav (Sistema Nacional de Identificação Automática de Veículos).
O uso da etiqueta eletrônica (TAG) será obrigatório a partir de 2014. Os veículos que forem flagrados sem o equipamento serão multados em R$ 127,69 e os motoristas perderão cinco pontos na carteira.
O sistema, considerado uma espécie de ‘Big Brother’ da frota brasileira, de acordo com a resolução do Conselho Nacional de Trânsito (Contran), vai ajudar a inibir roubos e furtos de veículos, além de ajudar na gestão do tráfego. As informações armazenadas nos chips — placas, número do chassi, Renavan, IPVA, multas e vistorias em atraso — serão captadas por antenas. Os dados serão repassados automaticamente para os Detrans. As polícias também poderão ter acesso às informações.

Apenas carros bélicos, de uso militar estarão livres dos chips.
